mathematicians on paper money

Mathematiker auf Banknoten

Mathematiciens sur Billets

Introduction:
Scientists or mathematicians are rarely to be seen on banknotes. Nevertheless, that's good to hear there are some to be found. Of course, there are less pictures of them on banknotes than on stamps, but so it is possible to be successful in collecting all of them. The missing issues are to be read below. Please send a mail to me if you can offer help. I don't pay attention to coins and medals showing mathematicians because we would lose track of things. Banknotes with other mathematical reference like geometric forms, nautical instruments are also not acquired.

Galileo Galilei (1564 - 1642) (PIC 77)

The front-side shows a well-known portrait of Galilei. On the right side the Leaning Tower of Pisa is shown where Galilei is supposed to have done his experiments of the free fall. In the blank space - beside his head - his best-known student E. Toricelli is added in as a watermark.
The backside shows on the left an image of the starry sky which is bound by signs of the zodiac. The image of the planets shows Satur - its system of rings was first discovered by Galilei - but without uncoding the system's nature. First Huygens succeeded in uncoding it. The four big satellites of Jupiter are still called the Galilean satellites. Galilei first directed a telescope towards the sky. For that reason on the right side modern facilities for star-observation are shown - observatories and radio telescope.
Stamps: Galilei und Toricelli

Janez Vajkard Valvasor (1641 - 1693) (PIC 12)

On Halley's advice Valvasor became a member of the Royal Society in London because of his works on topography of his home country. He was considered to be a universal scholar of his time who was especially successful in the field of hydrography. His statistical methods were so completely done that they were used to describe geologic facts for a long time.
P.S.: In his works 'Fame of the Duchy of Carniola' he wrote about skis as a mean of transport. Those were much more often used in Slovenia than in the north of Europe.

Democrit (around 460 - 371 B.C.) (PIC 196)

Together with his teacher Leukipp Demokrit was the philosopher who coined the atom's term. According to his opinion the world and the soul as well have consisted of smallest components which can not be divided - atomos - . With that he was in contrast to Aristotle. Demokrit developed geometrical forms of atoms as an illustration so that he was able to explain cohesion and change. Furthermore he developed formulas - strictly speaking - rules for calculation of cone and sphere.stamp
The front shows a bust of Demokrit and an atomic model with core and electrons which circulate around the core on orbits - like the planets around the sun -. The shown building is possibly a nuclear research institute in Greece (???).
The back shows a reconstruction of the academy established by Plato in Athens. This place of teaching and learning was an outstanding institution which existed in the world for the longest time. The emission of this banknote took place in 1967.
The 20 drachm banknote from 1955 is interesting as well (PIC 190). Even though there is only the portrait shown at the front, but on the back an interesting scene is to be seen. On the left intimated gods are shown that are having contact to the people on the right. But I am not totally sure, whether these persons are scholars (Plato, Sokrates, ...?) or however politicians in the Council of Athens. Perhaps one of you, nice readers, knows the answer. First Huygens had started law studies, then he turned to study mathematics and natural science. The best constructor of microscopes-Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723)-was in contact with him. Huygens constructed different optical instruments. His telescopes were considered to be the best ones. With the help of these telescopes he was able to discover the Saturn moon Titan, to decipher the nature of the Saturn rings, to calculate the Mars rotation and to speculate on the cloudy atmosphere of the Venus. It was due to him to calculate the pendulum. He had been in scholary dispute with Newton. Their controversy was about the nature of light: wave or particle? Only in 1923 the lights duplicate' nature was completely discovered.

Indeed, Albert Einstein wasn't a whiz kid. Lately he had learned to speak and his results at school were really not great. He started his studies because he wanted to become a teacher of mathematics and physics. He had been active in this teaching profession for two years. In 1902 he started a profession at the patent office in Bern. There are probably not many officials who successfully devote their spare time to theoretical physics. In 1905 he published three papers. Each of them could have been awarded a Nobel Prize. For further reading.

Le Verrier (1811-1877) (PIC 59)

Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier
Le Verrier is known as a caster of the planet Neptune. The planet Uranus was discovered by Henschel, but a further planet was assumed to be responsible for the orbit disturbances that were tracked. Le Verrier started to use the very complex rules of gravitational astronomy to solve this problem. His papers were so complicated that even Gau shrank from checking them. The practical revision was torn down by the Paris observatory which was later in charge of Le Verrier. That is why the German astronomer Galle became the discoverer of it. He found the before calculated planet more or less exactly at the point that Le Verrier had indicated.
The front shows the portrait of Le Verrier with a pair of compasses in his hand. In the background you can make out the Paris observatory. The reverse page shows a representation of Neptune as a symbol of the planet calculated by himself. The pictures sketched behind are constellations in the proximity of which Neptune was discovered. The spelling Pedro Nunez exists as well. He was the best known mathematician and astronomer of Portugal. In 1521/22 he studied medicine in Salamanca and acquired qualifications in this field. In 1529 he was offered a professor’s chair at university for logic and one year later for metaphysics. From 1537 to 1562 he taught mathematics at the University of Coimbra.
As one of the main use of astronomy was the navigation at sea, thus Nunes’ abilities especially appeared in this area. As one of the first scientists he developed maps that used the Mercator projection. Besides he occupied himself with the geometry of the sphere. He worked in the areas of geometry, physics, cosmology and even wrote poems. From 1529 till his death he hold the title of a Royal Cosmographer.

Michael Faraday was the son of a blacksmith. As his scientific interest emerged he did an apprenticeship as a bookbinder. He experimented in the field of electricity. He sent the obtained results to Davy whom then took him on as an assistant. Besides many experiments and discoveries in the area of chemistry his fame was based on the discovery of the laws of electromagnetic induction. His records are a sign of a precise mathematical operation, even if the full mathematical description of these regularities was successfully carried out by C. Maxwell. The unit for capacitance is named after him; Farad.

Bohr's father was a psychologist, his brother became a mathematician and his son became his successor at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen.
For a long time his favourite subject at school was Physical Education. During his last two years at school he increasingly turned towards mathematics and physics. In 1903 he began to study physics and signed up for courses in mathematics, astronomy and chemistry as well.
Later Bohr went to England to study with Thomson. There he met Rutherford who became a good friend of him for lifetime. In 1913 he published his model of an atom. The Bohr model or alternatively called the planetary model still today is easy to understand even if some things are not considered.
In 1920 Bohr received the chair of theoretical physics in Copenhagen. In 1922 he was awarded the Nobel Prize. ChristopherPolhem (also known as Polhammar) is as well called 'the Archimedes of the North'. Polhem's achievements passed almost unnoticed because he did not write them in Latin. In 1687 he began his studies at Uppsala University. He registered for the courses in mathematics, physics and particularly in mechanics. He constructed a large number of machines for the mining industry and used water power to operate them. Polhem was the teacher and later a friend of the brilliant Swedenborg (Swedberg). On the front of the bank note you can see the portrait of Charles XI depicted, who was the first supporter of Polhem. Beside the portrait there is as well a scene with a coach and many people shown. The back of the bank note is very interesting. The picture is predominated by Polhem’s portrait. On the left you can see a pit and a large cogwheel behind the portrait of Polhem. The excerpt from one of his works already indicates a fairly modern language of mathematical formulae from the area of geometry possibly analysis, too.

Stefaniak is one of the most popular men in modern history of Slovakia, the Czech Republic and France.
He was born in Kosariska in Western Slovakia. In 1900 he began to study at the Faculty of Philosophy at the Charles University in Prague. He signed up for the subjects mathematics, physics, astronomy and philosophy. His thesis covered the supernova which was very particularly described by Tycho Brahe in 1572 - a new star in the constellation of Cassiopeia.
After his studies he found an employment at the Meudon Observatory in France. His numerous works were published by the French Academy of Science. Stefanik obtained French citizenship and in 1912 he was offered a chair in Paris. During World War I he was in the diplomatic service being a general of the French army at the same time. Together with Benes and Masaryk Stefanik he founded the Czechoslovak National Council in Paris. With the collapse of Austria and the foundation of Czechoslovakia he became Minister of Defence. He died in a crash of his airplane during a mission, which led him to Italy.
The front depicts the portrait of Stefanik in a general uniform. On the back you can see the coat of arms of the republic which was governed by Benes until 1948. For reading up on.

Kaplan is above all known for the turbine named after him. His talents could already be seen to emerge when he was a schoolboy. He built an electric motor, a steam engine, a camera and water wheels. After his studies at the Technical University of Vienna Kaplan worked as a design engineer for internal combustion engines. The fact that he was offered an appointment at the German Technical University of Brünn (today Brno) with a chair in theoretical physics shows he had as well an extensive knowledge of mathematics and physics. In 1909, he gained his doctorate. For a long time he was working at the improvement of his turbine.
There are three basic types of turbines: 1. The Francis turbine (always operates but not always with maximal performance). 2. The Pelton wheel - ideal for higher heights and 3. The Kaplan turbine ideal for large quantity of water and small heights.
On the front you can see the portrait of Kaplan and as well the Kaplan turbine, which is similar to a ship’s propellar, with adjustable blades. The back depicts the Ypps-Persenbeug run-of-river power station on the Danube. There the Kaplan turbines have a diameter of 7.4 metres.

Mercator (born Cremer) studied among others philosophy and mathematics in Leuven around 1530. He carried out land sourveyings with mathematical instruments made by himself. His later talent in cartography already appeared in making his globes; 1541 an earth globe and 1551 a celestial globe. In 1552 he moved to Duisburg where he published his well-known heart-shaped map of the world in 1569. For the purpose of the presentation of his giant map of the world (1.31 m x 2.00 m) he used, as the first person, a way of projection, which is still today used as Mercator projection. The publication of several of his maps in one compilation was called atlas by him. Thus the term road atlas has a quite long history.
The front depicts the portrait of Mercator and his earth globe. On the back you can see Atlas the Greek God carrying the Earth. The representation of a map with conformal mapping of the earth’s surface, which is very important for navigation, completes the design of the very interesting note.

Descartes was a philosopher and mathematician. His most important achievement in mathematics was the algebraization of geometry. The use of coordinates enabled the description of geometric points in the plane (or space) by pairs (or triples) of numbers. Thus it was made possible to describe algebraic equations by geometric relations. Today every schoolchild get to know the Cartesian coordinate system named after Descartes. Further information.

I could not find out much about Petar Beron; author of Riben Boukvar – the Fish Primer. His book, published in 1824, was the first primer for Bulgarian schools. Apart from the description of modern teaching methods it comprised a compilation on grammar, natural sciences, mathematics, astronomy and literature. Beron studied in Heidelberg. The astronomical observatory in Sliven and the Dr. Petar Beron Second High School of Mathematics in Varna are called after his name.
The front depicts the portrait of Petar Beron. To the right of the portrait there are a globe and the front page of his well known book. Blaise Pascal was born in Clermont-Ferrand. His father held the office of the presiding judge of the fiscal court in Auvergne. As a sixteen-year-old he had already attracted attention when he published a comprehensive work on calculation of conic sections in Paris. To make life easier for his father he almost aditionally invented a calculating machine, three years later. At the age of 31 he went into a monastery to live a peaceful life. But he failed to live that way as he interfered in the Jesuits conflict. When feeling tired of everything he was drawn to mathematics from time to time.
On the front and back his portrait is depicted. He looks melancholy but, well, it is not a particularly remarkable note.

Sokrates (ca. 470 - 399 v.u.Z) (PIC 193)

Socrates is known as a Greek philosopher and he is attributed with using logical conclusions. His mother was a midwife. He was married with Xanthippe, who is certainly wrongly associated with a domineering wife. Socrates' art of 'philosophical midwifery' - maieuthics - forced his audience to reconsider their knowledge or superficial knowledge thoroughly and to distinguish between wrong and right. So Plato (who else) reported that Socrates was able to make an ordinary domestic servant realize that doubling the surface area of a square will end up in the fact that the new square must have the same length of the initial one.
On the front you can see a portrait of Socrates depicted. The back depicts the well-known scene in which Plato (in the middle) defends his teacher Socrates whereas Socrates himself (on the right side) is awaiting the later imposed judgement – death by poison. This was my first thought but then Sonja Heinz drew my attention to the fact that this is a scene with Saint Paul.

Rutherford 100 Dollar (1871 - 1937) (PIC 189)

Sir Ernest Rutherford of Nelson was born in Brightwater (New Zealand). He studied in Canterbury and worked from 1898 to 1907 in Montreal (Canada). Most people know Rutherford as an English nuclear physicist but in the year 1908 he obtained the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Rutherford discovered that due to radioactive decay chemical elements transmute into one another.
Statistical evaluation of his experiments regarding scattering, which he carried out by using alpha particles on a gold foil, formed the basis for his model of an atom; an atom consisting of an atomic nucleus and an atomic shell. For Rutherford mathematics was always a means to an end, it could help to better understand the phenomena of nature and to make them comparably describable. Thus he urged scrupulousness in argumentation and applied a high standard to precise measurement results. Furthermore he was the first to discover the artificial transmutation, a dicoverer of proton and a pioneer in nuclear fission.
The front shows his portrait. There is also the Nobel medal in front of which one can see a diagram with its curve showing the decay of radioactive materials. On the back side the mohua or the yellowhead is depicted. This banknote is a polymer note – an Australian invention.

Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) (PIC ???) Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the USA (1801 – 1809). Originally a farmer and lawyer in Virginia he went into politics in 1769. The wording in the declaration of independence of the USA from 1776 came mainly from his pen. He was an ambassador of the USA in France. Jefferson's election to the presidency was an extremely close result, there was a tied vote with the incumbent president Adams, whose vice president Jefferson had been since 1797. Jefferson decisively influenced the architecture of his time – orientated towards Greek style. Hence his farmhouse is the only historic building listed by UNESCO in the USA. But not only there he dealt with practical mathematics. Hence he dealt with the distribution of the seats of the representatives at elections – Jefferson's d'Hondt method. Jefferson's first invention disappeared to be invented for a second time 80 years later. He used a spindle with 36 alphabets to mechanize the Vigenère cipher. Once again he appeared as someone who was ahead of his time.

Florence Nightingale (1820- 1910) (PIC 379)

Florence Nightingale came from a wealthy parents' house. She had a good and religious upbringing. Therefore, at an early age, she devoted herself to sick persons. When she was 30 years old she started running a London hospital. Three years later she organized a relief campaign for British soldiers who were wounded in the Crimea War. She was called 'the Lady with the lamp' because she also looked after the soldiers during the nights. As she fell seriously ill herself she went back home. At that time she had already become very popular. She took care of the nurses' education and improved the equipment of hospitals. She also worked for the British government and used her mathematical gift in being active for the public health system. She conducted statistical surveys on numbers of inhabitants, birthrates, deathrates as well as causes of death. By way of illustration she created the so-called 'Pie Chart'. This is still used today, for example to show the distribution of seats in parliaments.
The front shows Elizabeth II. The back shows Florence Nightingale on the left, in the middle she is shown at her work on the Peninsula of Crimea.
The edition of this banknote was in 1988. (There are 6 variations of the banknote because of 6 different signatures on them- here it is Gill on the front.)

Rama IV. (1804 - 1868) (PIC 102)

So veröffentlichte er u.a.

"Juli", umbenannt.
